Plant Growth Conditions Lab
Learn that plants need sunlight, water, nutrients and a suitable temperature, and that too much or too little of any one can slow growth (the limiting factor idea).
Before you try
What if a plant got sunshine all day and all night? Would it grow twice as fast?

Growth here depends only on light, water and warmth. A real plant also needs nutrients, air and healthy soil, and can be set back by pests or disease.

Try these ideas
- Set everything perfect, then turn water to zero. What happens by day 30?
- Find two different settings that give the same height.
- Try the maximum for everything. Is more always better?
Why it works
Plants make their own food using sunlight, water and air, and they take nutrients from the soil. Each plant has a “just right” range: too little water and it wilts, too much and the roots drown; too cold and it stops growing, too hot and it dries out.
In this lab you set four conditions and grow the plant over 30 days. The stem height, number of leaves and colour respond to the weakest condition, just like a real plant is held back by whatever it lacks most.

Question 1 of 3
A plant gets lots of sunlight and nutrients but almost no water. What will most likely happen?
Which of these is NOT something plants need to grow?
What does “limiting factor” mean?
Explain it in your own words
What changed? Why did it happen? Where might you notice this in everyday life?

For parents & teachers
- Plant two identical seeds; give one no light. Compare after a week.
- Ask: why do farmers worry about both drought and floods?
- Which plants in your home get the most and least sunlight? How do they look?
