Why it works
Land heats up and cools down far faster than water. Through spring the Indian landmass gets hotter and hotter while the Arabian Sea stays near 28 °C. Hot air over the land rises, pressure there falls, and moist air rushes in from the sea to replace it: the south-west monsoon, which usually reaches Kerala around 1 June and brings most of India’s yearly rain in four months.
In winter the land is cooler than the sea, pressure over the land is higher, and dry winds blow out toward the ocean: the north-east monsoon, which gives Tamil Nadu its rain from the Bay of Bengal. It is the same physics as a sea breeze on a beach, scaled up to a continent.
